Is Christianity a Fear-based Religion?
Dear Brother Ron
Is Christianity a Fear based religion? Are we supposed to fear God and love
him at the same time? The Bible shows reasons to fear God but then Jesus
comes to make things right but if you don't believe in Jesus you need to
fear hell. Some people say this is to show God's love, but how do you love
someone like this? If your parent ever told you that you'd burn in hell if
you come home late tonight, what would you think of that parent? Crazy,
scary maybe but loving? Probably not.
Many churches use fear as a marketing and control mechanism. Do what we tell
you to do or you will burn in hell. Good marketing, lousy theology.
When the Bible speaks of fear of God, they are talking about fear of losing
God's love by disobeying God's commandments. I do not believe this is
possible. I have four children. They have all done things that disappointed
me. I did not stop loving them because of this. I believe our heavenly
Father is at least as good a parent as I am, probably better.
The Bible tells us there is no act good enough to earn my way into heaven.
Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by
the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we
might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law:
for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
If there is no act good enough to get me into heaven, there is no act bad
enough to condemn me to hell. As long as I have faith in God, I have nothing
